Jon Gale

Jon Gale is a portrait artist based in Liverpool, UK. He appeared on Channel 4’s Grayson’s Art Club, aired March 4th, 2021, and his painting Sisyphus Works the Night Shift was chosen by Grayson Perry to be exhibited at Bristol Museum & Art Gallery from 4th December, 2021 – 4th September, 2022.

His first solo exhibition Greek Myths, Northern Lives ran from 17th – 30th July, 2023, at CASS Art in Liverpool One.

Specialising in portraiture and figurative painting, Gale explores the diverse human experience through a strong narrative element. He fuses mythology and the everyday in a working-class setting, casting his subjects in heavy applications of oil paint to tell their story through colour, texture and depth.

Gale also experiments with his own ‘blocking out’ technique, in which he part-conceals his subjects under thick layers of paint to accentuate the details that capture their essence, further magnifying their character in a fusion of electrifying colour.

In addition to his experimental work, Gale’s diverse scope includes celebrity portraits, nudes, and previous commissions of pets and animals, in which he blends photographic likeness with a unique painterly warmth unachievable in cameras and smartphones.
